So I'm reading this actually terrific review of Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" at Mittani .com and I come to the eye-stopping sentence: Thus, he is not a relatable protagonist at first.

How about: He is a protagonist who is difficult to identify with at first.

THAT sounds like one knows what one is talking about. And makes one less skeptical of the critical abilities on display.
